My NAS is finally running for the most part. I need 1 more 4tb drive to get 4x4tb for raidz2 - should give me 8 or so tb for backup of other pc's and media - blu ray rips and such. I am also using the nas for video surveillance cameras that record on motion only. 1tb total is plenty of space for the cameras and 8tb will be more than enough for everything else.
In the short term I used 2 old 1 tb drives and mirrored them for the video cameras. The 3x4tb drives are just test storage - eventually I will add the 4th to create the raidz2 pool. Is that a good strategy? Keep the cameras which will write several times per hour on the 2x1tb mirror drives and the backup / media on the raidz2 pool which may only get hit twice a day or so.. some days none, others it will stream a movie? My thought is to save wear and tear on the backup / media drives.
