Hello all,

So recently I purchased a server off ebay.ca. Now without thinking about it I didn't notice that the only way other then the impi to connect the server to the network is using the dual 10Gb SFP+ ports.

For now I would like to avoid upgrading the entire network to 10Gb. I have found some 1gbit rj45 transceivers but I am unsure as to if they would work in the server for taking the 10Gb spf+ port down to a 1Gb rj45 port.

Links:

Transceiver: https://www.amazon.ca/FiberHal-Gigabit-Mini-GBIC-1000Base-T-Transceiver/dp/B01M28FRRS
Model of Nic provided by Ubuntu intel: 82599es 10 gigabit sfp+

If this is possible I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

It's hard to tell what cards are plugged into those PCIe slots, but a new Intel PCIe gigabit card can be had for $30 or so. Much less, used.

It's the 3 lsi cards. If there were any spare pcie slots I would've used them and added a nic

Some 10Gbps Ethernet chipsets that use SFP+s, (the plus indicates 10Gbps speed), can also take
SFPs, (without the plus, it's 1Gbps speed).

So potentially yes. BUT, and it's a big BUT, you have to check the specifications of your chipset.

I'm fairly certain all SFP+ slots are supposed to be compatible with SFP modules.

I can confirm that sfp+ ports are backward compatible with sfp.

Cisco GLC-T (1g copper) sfp's are compatible with your servers 82599. They can be had as cheap at 15 bucks on ebay or 4 dollars for third party copies.

Thanks,

You'd have to read the model number off the card to be sure, but that chip is used in an X520 and lspci on one of my Ubuntu boxes that has an X520 in it gives:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82599ES 10-Gigabit SFI/SFP+ Network Connection (rev 01)

So assuming you have an X520 this should give you the definitive answer:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/ethernet-products/000005528.html

If you look in the FAQ, it shows a couple 1G SFPs that are unsupported, but thought to work.

The most important thing to be aware of is that Intel "Keys" 10G optics, so you have to use one with an EEPROM the card will accept. If you buy generic, make sure their eeprom is coded the way you need. That shouldn't be a problem with a 1G SFP.

So bit the bullet and ordered one as the partner site that tries to sell the units before sending them to ebay recommends the CISCO 30-1410-02. Which for all intensive purposes looks like the same transceiver from amazon. While report back tomorrow unless intelcom screws up my order which knowing that company they will.
