How long did your ASROCK c2550d4i or c2750d4i last

Is this possibly the beginning of the end, or something else?

from kernel log:
Code:
ipmi0: KCS: Failed to start write
ipmi0: KCS: Error Data ff
ipmi0: KCS: Error Data ff
ipmi0: KCS: Error retry exhausted
ipmi0: KCS: Failed to start write

I bought my FreeNAS mini in Sep 2014. Its still running.

Though I have not yet done anything mentioned in @nickt's guide, I don't see any writes to IPMIConfig.dat:

Code:
$ inotifywait -mr -e close_write /conf/
Setting up watches. Beware: since -r was given, this may take a while!
Watches established.

No output after that.

So I guess whatever update @Ericloewe was referring to to be in 9.10.1 is helping? But then I upgraded from 9.3 only about a month back, so I guess any day now...

Edit:

Actually, there was one output, but like once in the 10 minutes I was logged in to the BMC. After that I got auto-logged out. So I guess I should still follow the guide, even though it might be a bit late for that.

Somehow, the watchdog timer in the BIOS was already disabled for me.

UEFI Version : C2750D4I P2.80
BMC Version : 0.23.0

Looks like it was the beginning of the end. All of the sudden no response from FreeNAS IP address so I logged into the IPMI and the display showed the normal FreeNAS menu, but it was frozen. I tried "orderly shutdown," nothing. I did "immediate shutdown" and it shut down. Turned it back on and now there is no video output. Another one bytes the dust.

My FreeNAS box with a C2750D4I died under similar circumstances a couple days ago, after a bit more than 2 years. It had been up before I went out for lunch, but after I returned, it would not power on (IPMI console would come up, but power controls did nothing). I pulled it all apart, tore it down to the board, and it still wouldn't turn on. After leaving it unplugged overnight, it turned on for a bit, but now won't again. I've requested an RMA, but I also have a new Xeon-based board and CPU on the way. So much for the Avoton.

Apparently there's some sort of mass die-off of C2xxx-based systems going on, not sure if that's related to this or not.

This C2750D4I die off, (mass or otherwise), is kinda sad. My FreeNAS Mini is just about
perfect. I needed enough SATA ports to support some of the less common things I wanted,
and the Asrock Rack board fit the bill. Here are the SATA ports I wanted / needed;
  • 4 ports for 3.5" disks
  • 2 ports for 2.5" disks
  • 2 ports for SATA DOMs, (used for Mirrored boot)
  • 2 ports for eSATA, (technically I needed only 1, but the PCIe back plane I used had 2...)
Oh well, if mine dies off, I'll see if RMA makes sense. Or what's available in a Mini ITX form
factor.

FreeNAS Bug 21010 (https://bugs.pcbsd.org/issues/21010) suggests new BMC firmware is close to at hand. From the description:

Description

We have a new BMC firmware for the FreeNAS mini / asrock motherboard. We will need to craft an alert that does the following:

Detects if they are on BMC firmware < 0.30.0 "ipmitool mc info" && are on FreeNAS mini "dmidecode | grep FREENAS"

The alert should probably point the end-user to an errata notice that contains updating instructions from here:

My freenas mini died last night. It was hung when I got up this morning. I powered cycled it, and it won't boot. IPMI is still working fine so it looks like I've fallen victim to the clock signal issue. I will be calling ix systems tomorrow to get a motherboard replacement. It lasted 2 years and 1 week.

I too have the 2750d4i motherboard and it died a week ago. Bought it in Nov 2015

FreeNAS hung, no response from IPMI or anything; restarted and IPMI came back but nothing else. Interesting thing was, first page of IPMI said system is powered OFF, but power controls page said System is Powered On. Sent it in for RMA and was (after 3 days of calling) told they have no replacement boards available and I have to wait, no idea how long.

Considering buying Supermicro instead now.

You got more than I did. They wouldn't give me an estimate and didn't say they don't have any boards. I've been waiting 2 1/2 weeks.

I just did that. Everything in my home runs off my NAS, and I can't wait any longer since it's unknown how much longer I'll have to wait.

They replaced mine a few weeks ago - it shipped to me on 2/22. I actually haven't tested the replacement yet because I went ahead and bought a Haswell Xeon board and an E3-1231v3 CPU, and replaced the Avoton outright with that.

Oh don't get me wrong, I had to squeeze quite a bit for them to admit they haven't got any boards.

The failures aren't turning me away as much as the absence of any communication and a general "we'll send it whenever" attitude. I can understand defects from a supplier, supply chain difficulties, but I don't understand how you can have such a lack of give-a-damn with your customers, especially in such a niche market.

Thanks for the replies on the timelines, I'm in the same boat, all my home data is locked away on the NAS and I don't really have 2+ weeks to wait for it.

I've bought mine in januari 2014 and it's still going strong. I've had some issues with it before, worst being the battery somehow dying on me and it wouldn't boot any longer, but on my second or third new battery it started working again. Also some smart errors that were fixed with the new firmware for the maxell controller. I've also disabled the watchdog timer some time ago.
