Hi There

My FreeNAS box bombed out this morning. I rebooted but couldnt access the share even though i could get to the webpage. Kept saying the ZFS status is unknown. I then shutdown the box and reseated all the HDD's. Booted up and i can access all the drives but it still says that the ZFS status is unknown. I did a zpool status -v and this is what i get:

Code:
[root@freenas] ~# zpool status -v
  pool: storage
 state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data
    corruption. Applications may be affected.
action: Restore the file in question if possible. Otherwise restore the
    entire pool from backup.

Your pool provides no redundancy at all.

What are your hardware specs? Do you run on non-ECC RAM? If so, run memtest for a couple of passes.

You should change to a RAID-Z1 or Z2 configuration and recover the damaged files from backup.

You'd better backup your data.. I'd expect your pool to spontaneously go offline permanently very soon from what you wrote.

Hi Warri, thanks for your quick reply.
My system is as follows
Code:
FreeNAS-8.3.1-RELEASE-p2-x86 (r12686+b770da6)
[root@freenas] ~# sysctl -a | egrep -i 'hw.machine|hw.model|hw.ncpu'
hw.machine: i386
hw.model: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5310 @ 1.60GHz
hw.ncpu: 4
hw.machine_arch: i386
3 gigs ECC Ram

I dont care so much about the damaged files. Just want to make sure that my hardware is not faulty. I was just using an old box with some hard drives to store stuff on.

I will go through cyberjock's guides and see if i can get the system more stable.

Is there a way to remove a hdd from the system without losing data?

Not in your configuration. If any of your disks fail, you will lose ALL data on the pool.

No. Your zpool configuration, unless I'm missing something, is one giant stripe. Taking any one drive out of that configuration results in total pool loss.

If you don't need any of ZFS's redundancy, when you rebuild this pool, build it on UFS.

Thanks very much for the info/advise. I will throw some money at my next FreeNAS box.
