Hello,

I recently updated a FreeNAS box from 8.0.4 to 8.3.x. Everything is working fine. The filer is hosting some VMs via NFS mounts. I still need to issue the zfs pool upgrade to get it to version 28. Do I need to do this via a maintenance window (ie, shut down the VMs which are using NFS mounts to the pool), or can it be done live? Thanks in advance.

There is no need to shutdown the VMs as this can be done live.

'zpool upgrade' will suspend I/O for a short period while the conversion happens, but should be nearly instantaneous on a quiet pool. You should wait for a quiet time, or quiesce clients beforehand, as to reduce the impact of the delay.

As always with any maintenance activity, ensuring relevant backups are current before starting is a good idea. It never hurts to be prepared. :)

Thanks. I was able to upgrade the pool successfully without turning off the VMs this morning.
