My ZFS server build is as follows
  • Rosewill RSV-L4500 Chassis
  • Seasonic S12II 620W Power Supply
  • Motherboard - ASUS P8B-X
  • CPU - Xeon E3-1220 - 3.1ghz (LGA1155)
  • RAM - 2x - Kingston Technology ValueRAM 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC CL9 DIMM (16GB total)
  • LSI 9220-8i in IT Mode + motherboard SATA for disks
  • 6x 4TB Toshiba MD04ACA400 in RAIDZ2
  • 6x 2TB Hitachi (5200rpm model) in RAIDZ2
There are two pools. One pool uses the 6x2TB drives which plug into the motherboard SATA, the other uses the 6x4TB drives which plug into the LSI HBA via SFF-8087.

The problem in question is with one of the 4TB disks.

Note that I do not run this server 24/7, it's used for archival/backup/retrieval, so it's turned on for maybe a few hours a couple of times a month maximum.

I have some recollection of the problem I'm about to describe happening with one of the other 4TB drives, and that the errors stopped incrementing after re-arranging some of the cabling / trying to get some of the power cabling away from the SATA cables (~23 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count). The design of the case makes messy cabling par for the course, though it's kind of weird since the case never moves from it's spot, so it's not like anything is being jiggled about.

The problem when it first came up:

I checked the cabling for that drive and it isn't crossing over any power cables or anything like that. I tried swapping the drive to one of the spare SFF-8087 sata ends and writing a bunch of data. The error count did not increase. I have not been able to make it increase. Of course if I start reading some of the files that triggered the errors in the first place when they were being originally written, then ZFS does warn me of errors.

So I decided to run a scrub, after doing a zpool clear to reset the counter.

The UDMA_CRC_Error_Count did not increase after a scrub. Though it does say "one or more devices has experienced an UNRECOVERABLE ERROR"

After scrub:

Code:
[root@freenas] ~# zpool status metabol
  pool: metabol
state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An
attempt was made to correct the error. Applications are unaffected.
action: Determine if the device needs to be replaced, and clear the errors
using 'zpool clear' or replace the device with 'zpool replace'.

I'm not sure what the story is here. "Unrecoverable error" suggests to me that even though the scrub fixed a bunch of stuff, there is still some problem? I'm not sure what to do next. My understanding is that this sort of error is rarely to do with the HDD itself, but rather with cabling/sata controllers?

Looks like it fixed itself. Probably messing with the cables fixed the problem.

Side note: what is your smart schedule set to? Looks like you are not really running extended tests.

I forget exactly, though due to how the box is used it's probably not going to work so well on a schedule. I'll make a note to do manual extended SMART tests on all of the disks.

So is the "unrecoverable error" a left over comment? For example: It was unrecoverable, but has now been fixed since the disk is marked as "online" ?

Yes, that's what I read it as.

Basically the disk seems to have lost some blocks. If I understand SATA protocol,
whence a bad block is re-written, it is spared out, (if any are available). Thus, the
scrub re-wrote bad blocks on the disk with good data, because your pool had
adaquate redundancy.

You can use "zpool clear metabol" to clear the error.

It's up to you to decide if / when to replace a disk. (I did not read your smartctl
results...)

O yeah and you probably are not running scrubs which will one day end up killing your data. Freenas is designed to run 24/7 when you power it down you are only hurting your data and yourself.

I run scrubs generally every couple of months, so perhaps every ~10 - 20 hours of use.

After a reboot (ran the scrub overnight, left server off while I was at work) it all appears to be showing as fine without having manually cleared any counters. So the scrub has repaired that data that was written with errors. After a bunch of reads/writes I can't get the error count to increase... Suspecting the cable might be a bit iffy, all I really did was unplug/replug in the end and it seems to have stopped it...

I'm going to run extended SMART on the drive and see if anything interesting comes up.

Unfortunately the issue seems to have returned. That same disk is now showing:

UDMA_CRC_Error_Count = 2273.

I tried moving the cables around a bit, and then running a scrub. The scrub crawls at ~4MB/s. While doing this the log is flying up with constant errors like this -

(da2:mps0:0:7:0): READ(16). CDB: 88 00 00 00 00 01 d1 c0 ba 00 00 00 01 00 00 00
(da2:mps0:0:7:0): CAM status: SCSI Status Error
(da2:mps0:0:7:0): SCSI status: Check Condition
(da2:mps0:0:7:0): SCSI sense: ABORTED COMMAND asc:47,3 (Information unit iuCRC error detected)

I'm thinking I will try a different SATA end (have free on the SFF-8087 cable going back to LSI controller).

Aside from that - good bet that the drive is on the way out? Any further testing I can do before replacing it?

Thanks guys.

Time to replace or rma the disk.

You should probably setup your system to run scrubs and smartd when you power it up for the month.

I suspect the "run every n days" setting might accomplish this.

Then just wait for the scrub and smarts to finish before shutting down.

I switched the SFF-8087 end to one of the spare ends. Started a scrub it has been going at 700MB/s as opposed to 4MB/s with errors on the other SATA end...

This is what I did last time however, so perhaps I am now back on the SATA end that was dodgy the first time. Scrub is going along fine though....

I'll replace the whole SFF-8087 cable once a new one arrives, and then scrub again. Fingers crossed it isn't actually the drive that is dead. If I still get errors after changing the cable I suppose I can certainly say it's the drive that is at fault.
