Yahoo has implemented new two step login for email accounts. This caused email sent on TrueNAS sever to output the following:

ERROR: failed to send mail: Connection unexpectedly closed

The solution to this failure can be found in this email reply from Yahoo tech support (see full email below):

Using the follow:

Continue using third-party mail apps securely
Use an app password

If you use Yahoo two-step verification, Account Key or an older email app, you may need to use an app specific password to access Yahoo Mail. Just remember, app passwords are only valid for the app they are created for and remain valid until you sign out or remove access to the app. At that time, a new app password will need to be created.

Learn how to generate third-party app passwords.

=======================================

Generate and manage third-party app passwords

Some older, third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. To access your Yahoo Mail account on these apps, you'll need to generate and use an app password. An app password is a long, randomly generated code that gives a non-Yahoo app permission to access your Yahoo account. You’ll only need to provide this code once to sign in to your third-party email app.

Generate an app password
  1. Sign in and go to your Account security page.
  2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.
  3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions below the password.
  5. Click Done.
  6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

Using Android Mail app option a password code is generated and then can be used as the TrueNAS server password.

This got the TrueNAS server back up and sending emails for us...

Hope this help.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Yahoo Customer Care!

I understand that you're having issues with your account in third party mail apps. No worries, I'll help you with that.
By default, we block access to Yahoo Mail from outdated apps that could leave your account vulnerable. If we sent you an email indicating that your app is using outdated security protocols or you're unable to log in from an older app, you still have several options available to you.

Password errors and access issues
If you try to use Yahoo Mail in a third-party email client using less secure sign-in technology, you might get a "Server password has changed" or an "Authentication failed" error message. This is because those email apps use outdated security protocols and we've disabled access to them by default now.

Use a secure option to access Yahoo Mail
Don't worry! You have options to keep using your Yahoo Mail securely and without interruption:

Continue using third-party mail apps securely
Use an app password
