This is a HP 12 bay SATA IBM processor based server.
Would this work with FreeNas?

It'd be slow, power hungry and loud.

That said, it can work, if you replace whatever RAID controller that thing has with a proper HBA.

What is a good SATA raid controller? Performance of the NAS is not a issue. It is holding backup files sent to it across the internet. I was looking at a Norco drive enclosure.

Would I be better getting one of those and building a PC around it?

I am trying to figure out what the 16gb is?? Is that a sas? Or is it 16GB of ram?? If it's ram seems like a good deal.
