Motherboard: SuperMicro X8DTU-F
CPU: 2 x Intel Xeon E5645
Ram: 96GB DDR3 ECC
Boot Drive: 2 x Transcend SSD370S 32GB
Storage Drive:6 x 8TB Seagate ST8000NM0055
LSI 9201-16i
Chelsio 10GBASE-CX4 S320E-CXA
FreeNas 11.0 U4

I've been using my machine harder than normal over the last month and it doesn't look like i'll be letting up on it anytime soon, what I've noticed because of the extra load is that SMB has been bouncing between 85-114 percent (only actually seen 114 once, normally stops at 104) while actually working from the pool. I was thinking it was time to replace my E5645's with X5690's but i'm open to idea's

You have two Intel Xeon, giving you 12 cores or 24 threads.

I wouldn't worry until Samba reaches 1000% utilization. 100% on the process just indicates you're using 1 core. Your overall CPU utilization is probably 10-20%

As far as I know samba is single threaded which is what is concerning me.

Samba fires up a new process for each connection. One user = one process.

I had suspected that...... thanks for the confirmation. What do you believe I should do about the fact that I'm maxing out a single core? If a samba process will utilize multiple cores I'll look elsewhere to improve performance (or maybe just live with it until I finish the task)

With the higher clock of the x5960, you should see nice improvement in performance. I have upgraded several of my older systems at work and been able to extend their life. Some of the ones I have were originally built with 1.6 or 2.2 GHz processors and the upgrade really gave a big boost to the responsiveness.

The X5690's certainly did make a difference still need to do more testing to see just how big of a difference.
