Do you have access to another computer that you can plug the USB drive into, boot of the FreeNAS CD, install FreeNAS onto USB drive and than move the USB drive over to the laptop and see if it will boot to the USB drive?

Hi popUP, I installed Freenas 8.0 to a 4Gb Sandisk USB stick without problems. So I'm not sure what's going wrong in your case...

However, the stick should be recognized right away if you burn and boot the image.

Oh yes, an afterthought on booting from USB. Over the years I've come across several computers that persistently wouldn't boot off a USB key, even though they advertised that possibility in the BIOS. So it's going to be trial and error, I suppose.

Hi guys. it wouldn't let me put it on my 4gb usb because of 2gb Wright protection. i managed to get it booted up with the live cd FREEnas. but now i cant get the Ethernet port to work. so i cant even access it by the web interface. :(
i also have a usb to ethernet. p even plugged that in (nas reconised it) but that wont even work. i checked ip address on the nas and it was tttp://:80 when entered into a web browser it dident work :(
