Been looking all over for the answer to what I want to know... Finally decided to just sign up for these forums...
4 TB WD Red $180
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236599
or
4 TB HGST Desktar NAS $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145912
I read over this:
http://blog.backblaze.com/2014/01/21/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/
and Hitachi drives tend to have a longer life than WD (with Seagate being a fail)
also I have had really good success in the past with Hitachi HDDs personally
My biggest concern is whether the heat or anything else that might be an issue with the HGST drive... its running 72oo rpm versus the WD which runs 5400 rpms. with 11 drives 5400 is plenty of speed.
Is there other concerns besides just heat I should have for the HGST?
I just have more faith in Hitachi, though I don't know if its worth the extra $220 it will cost. (I can get them for the same cost if I order by 3/5 but I probably won't by then)
I'm currently planning on buying 11 HDDs and using Cooler Master Cosmos II case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119252
also open to suggestions on housing 11 drives another way without a rack mount. Cosmos II is the best idea I've come up with.
Thanks for the feedback
