Which disk to replace (and resilver) first? WRITE_FPDMA_QUEUED & Raw_Read_Error_Rate

It appears (at least) two of the drives in my 5 disk raidz2-0 array seem to be unhappy and I'm planning to replace at least one of them.
I recently started receiving emails from FreeNAS like the below, this has been happening for a few weeks while I've been without physical access to the machine.

However, smartctl for ada2 seems just fine (full output at the bottom of this post)
Fortunately, while trying to look into ada2, I spotted that ada5 has a very significant error rate, and is probably on the way out, if not already dead.
(I've not received any notifications/warnings from FreeNAS about ada5)

If I understand the WRITE_FPDMA_QUEUED error message correctly, it's possible that there is something wrong with the backplate or sata cable the disk is connected with.
My plan is to replace ada5, give it time to fully resilver, then investigate ada2, the first test being connect it directly to the motherboard without the backplate, in case that's bad.

Does this plan make sense? Are there any other tests I could/should run first? What would you do in this situation?

This is a connection problem, start by replacing the SATA cable.

I spotted that ada5 has a very significant error rate, and is probably on the way out, if not already dead.

That's normal for Seagate drives, it's a multi-bit attribute, the actual errors are still at zero.

That was my understanding yes, though I thought, in this case, it was the backplane.

Well that's very confusing, but I'm certainly glad to hear it! Hopefully, if I replace the backplane/sata cable on ada2, all will resolve itself then!

The attribute it 48bits long and the last 32 bits show the total number of reads attempted, the upper 16 bits show the actual errors, if you want to check just the number of errors you can with:


smartctl -a -v 1,raw48:54 /dev/ada5
