Where are the screen/console logs written to?

I'm having lots of trouble with my server lately, with lots of crashes, so I'm trying to get info from the logs.
I've created a dataset called syslog, so the message log is retained after a crash - but all the messages that go to the actual monitor connected to the server are not found anywhere in that folder. How do I access those?

I believe it is /var/log/message

Unfortunately not. The messages I see on the screen do not end up in /var/log/message...
