Hi,
have been using freenas 8 release since it came out and have had no problems until today. Nothing has changed in my setup as far as I am aware and I am still able to access the shares with no problem but I now get a 503 - Service Not Available message when trying to log on to the web interface. Any tips on where I should be looking to find out the fault would be gratefully received. I am not very knowledgeable when delving under the hood of freenas, (luckily for me it "just works") so nothing too complicated if that's possible :)

thanks
nick

just to point out the obvious right away, you have tried rebooting the FreeNAS system, right? could just be the http daemon that crashed

Hi Bohs,

thanks for the response - yes, I've restarted the pc a couple of times now (power off and power on). I don't have a keyboard or monitor on it at the moment so have not been able to look at any startup messages - i've tried to avoid that because I access it from a laptop and will need to rob a monitor again to stick on there. Should that be my next step or are there any other ways of getting info from it ?

Did you configure SSH? If so try connecting that way if the web interface is down.

Hi Tekkie,

only if it was configured by default - ( you'll need to tell me what SSH is )

Ok nevermind the SSH then.

Have you tried cleaning your browser cache?

Hi Tekkie,

Yes, and also tried IE8, Firefox and Chrome, all the same so I assume the problems the other end. Have just downloaded and tried using the WinSCP (SSH) client - no response but that's with the default port settings etc (22) - not certain what settings to use or even whether the service got installed by default.

all services are disabled by default on install, so you're prolly out of luck there. Since you can't access the box atm directly, only thing that comes to mind is trying to read the logs by moving the USB stick to your normal comp. However there is most likely a hdd format issue if you run a win/mac machine.
Maybe someone else has an better/working idea

Hi ohnename,
didn't really want to upgrade until 8.1 comes out with DLNA support as up to now the release has been working fine for me, but it might be a way forward. Will get a monitor connected to it and see if any of the startup messages give me a clue, if not I might just re-install 8.0 and see if it starts working again.

Hi All,

I've got a monitor on there now and something is definitely not right, after everything has initialised the screen now shows a repeating message:

FreeBSD/amd64 (freenas.local)(ttyv0)
ValueError: bad marshal data (unknown type)

Does this give any clues ??

There are errors before this but they scroll off the screen too quick - is there any way I can capture the startup messages to a file ?

Thanks for your help so far.

scroll lock and then your arrow or page keys should work to see them, dunno about logs locations

Hi Bohs,
thanks.

I've got:
chown: /tmp/django.sock: no such file or directory
etc/rc: WARNING: failed precmd routine for django

then it starts lighttpd and stuff, then:
fetch: http:/192.168.1.250: Service Unavailable (thats the IP address I've given the box)
lighttpd already running ? (pid=1838)

any clues there ??

Hi All,
have just upgraded to 8.01 beta 2 and the web interface is now working again although I seem to have the problem that some others have had in that the web page is not displaying any information if i log on with IE8. Firefox and Chrome work fine.
Will see how long it stays working for this time - thanks to all that offered advice.

Nick

Follow Up:

problem with no info showing in IE8 appears to be due to the 'compatability mode' setting in IE8. Take it out of compatability mode and everything works fine.

Just had the same problem happen to me but I have SSH available and can log in via SSH but the webgui is unresponsive. I even tried resetting the webGUI credentials and rebooting, no good so far. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I changed it from HTTP to HTTPS though neither get me a web gui.
I might add I'm using 8.0.2RL and I don't see any errors at the console.

I fixed the problem by selecting "Reset to Factory Defaults" at the console and restoring my system configuration.

have the same error. What does the message "failed to start lighttpd" means? Thanks for your support

lighttpd is the web server, so it means that your FreeNAS machine couldn't start the web server for some reason.
