VMWare-Snapshots only for VM stored on Freenas?

Hi, I have a question regarding VMWare Snapshots, does this work only for Virtual Machines stored on ZFS Datasets (connected through iSCSI or NFS to VMware ESXi)?. Or I can store the VM snapshots in FreeNas regardless of the location of the Virtual Machine?.

My setup is pretty simple, one ESXi server connected to an Dell Storage where the Virtual Machine's datastores live, then a FreeNAS server used for backup. So, the FreeNAS server does not serve the datastores. I would like to know if it is possible to snapshot those VMs in FreeNAS.

It's only for the datastore the freenas holds.

Nutshell the process is:

1) Trigger or schedule a snapshot to run on the Freenas for the storage point that is presented in VMWare
2) Freenas via the VMWare Snapshot process, sends a notification to the ESX host for the VMs on that Datastore to take a snapshot
3) The snap runs on the Freenas storage point
4) Freenas VMWare Snapshot process then tells VMware to remove the VM Snaps that are on that datastore.
