Virtualbox VM Storage Access Best Practices?

I'm thinking of setting up the new virtualbox jail with a virtual appliance used for retrieving and organising media files (i.e. using sabnzbd, sickbeard, couchpotato, etc) called Tretflix which comes in two formats, a:

• NAS Edition (Intended to be used w/ a network share)
• Standalone Edition (Intended to be used as a standalone solution)

Which would be the best option considering the files will be stored on a ZFS pool on the host FreeNAS box. Should I use standalone (and what am I looking into in terms of passing through a dataset) or using a network share (not sure if this will actually go over the network or if it will resolve locally through the jail and bypass having to go over the router).
