So far, I'm thoroughly happy with 8.3. I find that all the hard parts are my misunderstanding and limited knowledge. I think this is another of those.

I installed to a 4GB USB drive. I found these for about $4.00 each, bought two, and am now able to make a backup image of the whole USB pretty simply. FreeNAS installs on 2GB. Can I set up the extra 2GB on the boot USBs to store system logs? If so, how? Periodically copy logs to USB with a cron? Is there a simpler way?

It would probably be easier to make a dir on your storage vol. and use a cron entry to copy there. Then you don't need to mess around with hacking FreeNAS to do what you want. You can then easily access the logs from other machines to either analyze, copy, etc.
