Hi,

I have completed my FreeNAS build, but my ISP who is Bell Canada have deployed FTTH in my area so I will pass from 50/10 Mbits to 175/175 Mbits but I want to do something, I want to have one connextion of 15/15 Mbits for my household internet and another 175/175 Mbits for acces my FreeNAS server from the outside. Unfortunatly my motherboard have only one Intel NIC, so can I brought an USB 3.0 NIC and plug it in into an USB 3.0 port of my motherboard? Will this will work with 3.0 or I will be better with an USB 2.0 100/10 NIC? I prefer an USB 3.0 NIC due to the 175 Mbits speeds I can get with my ISP.

Thanks for your reply!

It would be better to get a Intel PCI express NIC, i think that is the headache free route

Hi,

Thanks for the hint. But unfortunatly I run out of PCI Express ports since I use all of them (six) for plug SATA controllers with 4 SATA III ports on each of them for a total of 24 HDDs in a Norco RPC-4224 server chassi. So can I hook an USB 3.o GbE NIC or I am better with a USB 2.0 NIC?

Why not use an IBM M1015 to free some PCI-e slots?

Hi,

Unfortunatly I have already brought the controllers. Its not possible to return it since I have it for more than 30 days and the same things for the SFF-8087 to SATA cables. The only possible option is to sell all of them but I will loose a lot of money so I prefer to not do this.

For my question about the USB 3.0 or 2.0 NIC, which option will work?

AFAIK the M1015 also uses SFF-8087 connectors. But yeah, I can understand for the controllers.

I would say not to use a USB NIC... :D

Ok, more seriously, for USB 3.0 to work you need to do some tweaks (search on the forum to see what exactly) and it's not guaranteed to work IIRC.

I wonder if you have any free PCI slot and if it would be faster than USB 2.0?

There are *no* USB NICs that have drivers on FreeBSD. So don't bother. We went through this about 6 months ago. Someone bought 2 or 3 before realizing there is nothing out there.

So you are either buying that M1015 and an Intel NIC, or not doing this. Choose one. :P

Hi,

I find a way to do things without an USB NIC,

I have created an alias in FreeNAS, so the ISP router number one have this config: IP 192.168.1.1. The ISP router number two have this config: IP 192.168.2.1 . So I have set the default gateway in FreeNAS to 192.168.1.1 otherwise it won't work. I have created an alias with the IP 192.168.1.2 and the main IP is still 192.168.2.2 . I make some tests and voilà, all work fine with just one NIC (integrated to the MB). I didn’t play with the subnet mask since all works fine in the first shot.

I hope this can help other with the same questions and issues.

Thanks to all also for their replies!
