I just added a new encrypted Z2 pool to my server but alas, one of my drives turned out to be DoA. Got the pool up and running and left it degraded while waiting for the new drive to arrive. New drive gets here and I start the re-silvering process and I get the above error. I try it again, same error. I start researching and poking around FreeNAS and I see the little "resilvering" icon up top. I check and it's progressing through a resilver despite throwing an error earlier - no problem - I'll let it finish.

Somewhere around 80% resilver we got a series of write errors that sent ATA from 0 to 1. In response, I ran a SMART test that completed without error. Then sometime after I went to bed ATA went from 1 to 2. Thought strangely FreeNAS never reported this.

Honestly I just ended up destroying the pool and re-creating it as non-encrypted - since it's brand new I have that option. SMART test is running again with no issues so far. It's just slightly alarming that re-silvering might not be an option for me on encrypted pools.

dmesg is pretty clear that you have some issues with da5.

Maybe it's cabling or the connection of the disk to the backplane... could be a bunch of things. I don't have the conversion in mind to check your SMART output numbers, so I'll assume those are showing no errors and that it's all about the cabling or controller.

I suppose we'll see. I'm filling the pool with data right now and after that I'll probably scrub just to be sure. I would expect the error to present again since I haven't touched any hardware yet. If it doesn't pop up again I guess I'll throw my hands up.

Heads up here though: No backplane - this one is connected to an LSI HBA card.

Ok we're getting the Logcal unit not ready errors on da3 now instead of da5. So that's weird but indicates something else is going on. I'm going to crack open the case and re-do some cables.

Edit: Ok back to putting data onto the pool. Looks like some SATA connections were pretty close to a whole tangle of power chords so maybe some EMF there? Idk.

Edit 2: Alright. Filled almost half way with data and then did a scrub. No errors to speak of. My guess is EMF caused by the SATA cables basically touching the power supply.

Ran SMART overnight on all of them and got 8 unrecoverable and 8 unreadable sectors on da5. Further sign the drive is dying? Should I return it?

Do you think the ST2000LM003 would be free of SMR? I don't see it on the ixsystems forum list. I have a few ST2000LM007's in this pool and they all seem fine.

According to the Seagate data sheet, these models should still be CMR.
