Unable to GPT format the disk ada0; unable to wipe ada0

been running into problems due to incredibly bad luck or (probably) just sheer ignorance... been wanting to make a freeNAS build for a long while, been reading up as much as i can while gathering the money. I just got started saturday; so have a bit of base "theoretical" knowledge, but zero practical.

first problem: it would not install on my sandisk ultra. a bit aggravating but then I noticed on the package that there was security software on it. sure its an easy fix with the right utility, just was eager to jump in so got my 64 gig corsair voyager primed and it installed right away. that is, it said it did but i could not get into the webUI for the life of me and it frustrated me to no end. for whatever reason after who knows how long and after trying on all my computers, i tried to load it up on my iphone and came up just fine; then i booted onto mint (all my computers are multi boot, just wasn't thinking it was a windows issue) and that worked just fine. I don't have any active directory services or anything at my house. i can tackle that issue later (although it is maddeningly confusing to me), this is what is currently driving me crazy:

without forethought after being frustrated by that issue for far too long to admit, i chose my volume name poorly. I decided before i started adding jails, I should go ahead and get proper naming set up. so i got into shell and did "zpool export oldname", "zpool import oldname newname". seemed like it worked but when i went to the volume manager it wasn't showing up. gave it some time to think then started trying to auto import it and it wasn't recognizing anything. deep breath, ssh'd in and ran "sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=0x10" then "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada4 bs=512 count=1 && dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada5 bs=512 count=1". no errors, back to the webGUI to wipe and got middlewareerror: failed to wipe ada02 not permitted.

any help would be greatly appreciated. don't really need hand holding, just a gentle nudge in the right direction would be great as my stress is currently debilitating right now.

all new hardware right out of the box:
ASRock Rack serverboard octocore c2750
3x 4T wd red drives
16g ripjaw memory (i know, not ideal; plan on replacing with good ecc in a couple months).
thought maybe it was the quality of ram issue, tried it from scratch with my workstation's mushkin ridgeback (which produced the same issues)

I decided before i started adding jails, I should go ahead and get proper naming set up. so i got into shell and did "zpool export oldname", "zpool import oldname newname". seemed like it worked but when i went to the volume manager it wasn't showing up.

The solution to this would have been to "zpool export newname" from the CLI, then import the volume from the GUI.

I'm not sure why you ran those dd commands, or what you expected them to do. I understand that GPT places partition table information at the beginning and end of the disk, though, so if you were trying to destroy the partitioning on the disk this wouldn't have done it. To effectively wipe the disk, I see DBAN recommended here a bit--but why are you trying to wipe the disk?

didn't fully understand the need for such a full dd, but i was (am) desperate and frustrated..

edit: and CLI to GUI export import makes sense. thank you, will most definitely use that for future use

I believe we've seen problems with things getting stuck on unusual GPT labels, so wiping the labels may make sense.

Wiping the entire disk to get rid of GPT labels can be excessive. The problem is that identifying the size of a disk and then coming up with the appropriate dd incantation is not obvious to new users.


It is possible to pull the size of the disk out of "dmesg" and then calculate offsets.

Technically you can just stomp the GPT header, but for extra "blow it away good" goodness it helps to go a little further.

And what I've done there with the first count is just used 1000, and with the seek is just zeroed out the last few digits, 'cuz, y'know, sysadmins are lazy and it gets the job done without having to remember EXACTLY how large that label is.

The choice of 1000 is just laziness, large enough to guarantee the job, small enough to be fast about it.

getting the error "dd: /dev/ada0: Operation not permitted"... i guess that option isn't going to work.
would it be possible to "start from square one" by doing something with parted magic or an operating system of the like to the hard drives, then use a clean FreeNAS usb after? if so, what function on what system should i use?

okay, hold on, in a few hours, I can take a look at this. I have fairly thorough recipe for formatting drives with unknown contents, but I do not have it handy here at the moment.

Hm, it isn't quite as easy to extract as I had hoped. It still gives a pretty good outline.

1) You're going to want to look at what the OS sees out there: "gpart list".

2) You're going to need to delete or destroy whatever's out there. You *MIGHT* be able to do just a "gpart destroy -F ada0". That doesn't seem to work on certain types of labels, though.

3) If not, I'd try the following:

This simply looks through the output of "gpart list" for things that appear to be part of "ada0" and tries to do a "gpart delete" on the likely partitions on them. Not all of that is expected to work, but it's quick and cheap.

Then we do something similar to destroy the partitions.

At which point HOPEFULLY "gpart list" would show nothing out there for ada0, and then you go on to do the dd wipe I suggested above.

The problem is that disk partitioning can be complicated and it is hard to cover every conceivable possibility. If that doesn't work, pull up DBAN and use it in single-pass zeroing mode.

hmmm, none of the drives are showing in gpart list, just my boot flash disk. should i run those two scripts regardless, or go straight to DBAN?

nevermind, it's working! something i ran last night did the trick because when i tried to create a volume, i got a new different error saying that it was already part of a pool. so a quick zpool list then zpool destroy had me up and ready to go. awesome, now if i can just figure out why my windows machines can't access the web GUI, I'll be as content as content can be!
