  • FreeNAS 11.0-U2 STABLE
  • Supermicro X10SLM-F-O uATX
  • Intel G3420
  • Kingston 16GB (8GB x 2) ECC w/Hynix DRAM, 1333MHz, 1.5V - KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G
  • (4) WD Red 2TB in RaidZ2
  • (2) Supermicro SATA DOM boot drive in mirror - SSD-DM016-PHI
I have a pair of 16GB SM SATADOMs as my boot drive in a mirror. My server doesn't live in a mission-critical environment and I can do without the second boot device as I have another use for it - to become the boot device for a ESXi vSphere Hypervisor. The Internet has not been any help except for maybe this reddit thread
https://www.reddit.com/r/freenas/comments/4uj1w1/remove_mirrored_boot_device/

I just wanted to check with you all first to see if it's
  1. possible to remove a boot device from a mirror
  2. how do I do that?

You can simply go in the boot tab, select the disk you want to take away and push the detach button. :)

I was concerned that that would put me into a degraded state. I guess not. Thanks!

You can do it quite easily and reliably in the CLI. I forget the exact command. It is on the forum.

The command at the CLI would be zpool detach freenas-boot <device>

I would generally wipe the device in the GUI after that to clear the boot blocks.
