hi,
I purchased a lenovo ts140 after suggestions from members here. I am unsure of where to go from here.
here is my machine spec and what i intend to use it for.
lenovo ts140:
32gb ECC ram
intel e3 1225 v3 processor.
and these are my drives:
2 * 120GB SSD(different makes/models). 1 has 450MB read/write and the other has about 250MB read/write.
1 * 250GB SSD.
1 * 3TB 3.5" NAS HDD.
1 * 1TB 3.5" HDD.
1 * 2TB 3.5" HDD.
2 * 1TB 2.5" HDD.
1 * 2TB 2.5" HHD.
I know ye recommend NAS HDDs but after purchasing the machine I can’t afford them now and have plenty of other HDDs lying around. I was hoping to use these for a few months and then purchase NAS HDD.
What I will be using the machine for is:

What I will be using the machine for is:
- Central data store.
- Plex server
- Time machine backup for 2 macs.
- VM's for a proxy server and a VPN server.
Now my questions are:
- What should I use to store the FreeNas OS. should I just use a USB 3.0 device as i know a lot of the SSD memory will be unusable if I use 1 of them? does it have to have a minimum read/write?
- Should I use 1 of the SSD's to store the VMs as these will more than likely always be running?
- what storage configuration should I use so that I can upgrade/expand the storage pool easily when I get bigger HDD's?
- Does freenas recognise other file systems. So I can connect an external USB device to the freenas and transfer the data stored on them the freenas storage or do i have to use a PC?
