Hello, I had upgraded from FreeNas to TrueNas last year.

I was getting auto updates via the system but lately having noticed that it's been maybe a year and no updates?

So I looked around and version 13 is out. I'm running TrueNAS-12.0-U8.1.

My question is, why hasn't the update come thru the system updates? Or do I need to download a patch file for this one?

Thanks...

Did you look on the Updates page at the Train you're on? if you don't change to the 13 STABLE train, you won't get 13 as an upgrade.

Sorry to drag up an older thread but when i try to change trains from 12.0-U8.1 to 13 it never stays like that. I change trains and refresh the list and it shows the current version and then what it will be. It keeps reverting back to 12.0-U8.1 every time. Ive even used the CLI to manually force the 13 train with TRUE as the result after running the command to force a train.

Ive never been able to update or upgrade the version using the GUI. It performs the required steps to upgrade and then reboots but stays on the same version. Changing boot environments in the GUI has never worked for me.

If i change the boot environment in the Boot loader screen it shows at least 4 different environments. Trying an environment other than Default ends up as a Mountroot error 2 crash.

Im going to attempt (Again) an ISO install from scratch and then import my config if im successful. Ive been trying to update this box for 2 years with no success.

Ive tried that. It appears to install correctly and reboots and the Mountroot error 2. I downloaded a fresh ISO today and installed it on ada0 (SSD) and selected fresh install. installs as it should and reboots. Boots to the boot console menu as it should. I go into the GUI and its still listed as 12.0-U8. Ive gone into the boot environment tab and selected the new 13.0-U5.1 to reboot-Active. and it does nothing. just reboots to 12. Ive ran the update iso now 4 times today with no change.

Basic run down of drives and pools
1 x Pool (Storage) 4 x 2.7tb drives
1 x pool (File Storage) 2 x 600tb drives
1 x SSD to install system
da7 was spare and not sure why its a boot-pool

ada0 78LS104NTPxx 238.47 GiB N/A (install the iso update to here) SSD
da0 Z1Y3A8VE0000Cxxxxxxx 2.73 TiB Storage
da1 17E0A066FxxC 558.91 GiB File Storage
da2 Z1Y3A94G0000Cxxxxxxx 2.73 TiB Storage
da3 Z1Y3A9HR0000Cxxxxxxx 2.73 TiB Storage
da4 Z1Y3AEMX0000Rxxxxxxx 2.73 TiB Storage

da6 W7M03MZxx 558.91 GiB File Storage
da7 3SJ30Dxx 279.4 GiB boot-pool
da8 0 B N/A is Idrac card

I can change the update train to the new one, but it never stays like that. I can download updates fine and apply them. System reboots as normal after that but still stuck on 12. running out of ideas.

Why does your train still say 12? Did you not change it?

I changed it to 13 and hit refresh. its shows the update path as pictured above. i selected download update and it did its normal thing. Downloads/reboots and goes back to 12. In the boot cli screen there is no option to change boot environments. Only kernel-default and kernel-debug. i even ran the tar update and it completes as it should. BUT it still stays on 12-U8. Strange thing is that my Plex jail/plugin crashed with kernel errors. Had to install that again and remap shares etc. The new version of Plex is now 13.1 release P8. im not sure if im doing anything wrong repeatedly but ive followed the install/setup guides to the letter.

Ive also switched trains again to 13 as this screen shot shows.

I can apply or download updates but the upgrade doesn't work. It still stays on 12-U8.

Each time i download or apply updates a new BE gets added to the boot environment tab. as below.

Its going to get hard as 12 gets too old and i cant switch to the latest version. My goal is to switch to Scale but i cant do this from 12.

Ive done that multiple times and same result. Upgrades with the new BE showing but not booting into new BE. Its like the 12 is locked.

Also clear your browser cache.

A fresh install might be in order.
Davvo.
Tried that already. Used the tar upgrade and it installs ok. but never changes to the new BE. I use Firefox and have cleared the cache but im not sure what relevance my browser cache has to do with my server ?. i sometimes need to clear it when IDRAC refuses to log into server.

That's why I'd go for a fresh install: save the config, nuke the boot drive, install the new OS, import the config.

It could have been a WebUI/Broswer being stuck with an old cache piece; sometimes cache is quite amusing. iirc it's suggested to clear the browser's caches every update, but I might remember wrong.

so basically i can do the upgrade from within Truenas plus using the ISO or the tar upgrade options. all with the same result.
Performs the upgrade as it should with the new BE showing in the Boot environments tab.
I can set the new BE active in that Tab. I reboot to try to apply the new BE at the Boot screen but there are only two Kernels there (Default & Debug).
Im looking at why the upgrade is not applying.

I did that first up yesterday. Fresh install option using the ISO version. Fresh install and upon reboot it boots back to 12-U8. I didnt even need to upload my config. Im not sure why i load the updates on ada0 its not taking. perhaps its the boot-pool disk which may be the culprit. I might try another physical drive. Unplug ada0 (the SSD). do a fresh install onto the new drive and see what happens. If it grabs the 12-U8 then i will n\know its getting the config from the boot-pool disk.

Did you format the boot drive?
It was formatted in the update process. That may be the issue. Perhaps it wasnt fully formatted (Nuked) maybe the update style of formatting just wipes the MBR. when i get home i can try a format of ada0 first then try the ISO install onto the fresh drive. process of elimination this. Normally it should be this hard to upgrade an OS.

I am confident that manually formatting the drive and installing the new OS will do the trick.
Don't forget to save your config if you don't want to setup everything again!

Thanks Davvo.
I do regular saves of my Config. Before a change and after a change . Justin Case
On a side note what information would be on the Boot-pool disk. I was under the impression it was the boot drive that stored all the OS and settings. Im more used to Linux and Windows than FreeBSD.
