Do the virtual machines (VMs) running under bhyve/iohyve need to update their own time (via NTP) or is this unnecessary because they simply use FreeNAS's time?

No. Since no one answered, I assumed that:
  • Of course the VM uses the host clock, and
  • It must be a stupid question.

Actually, I would think that it depends on the Client in the end.

The VM would get its time from the "emulated" BIOS which is getting its time from the VM Host.

But once the OS is loaded (and has access to the Internet) I am sure that you could set it to point to an internal or external NTP Server. *** Thinking like how Windows usually defaults to something like "time.windows.com"...

Of course since I don't use bhyve/iohyve, it is all a "best guess"... :)

The clock on the VM should remain in sync with the host. However, due to timings within the kernel, it's possible for it to drift ever so slightly. It doesn't hurt to configure NTP on your VM and point it to the FreeNAS host as it runs NTP by default.
