Trying to install TrueNas 12.0-U4 on a new computer build with a ASUS Tuf B450M-PRO S amd MOBO and a ASUS 10g xg-c100c NIC

And when I run TrueNas I just get that error in the title cause it doesn't have the proper driver. So I read online that a 10gb Intel x520 NIC works with TrueNas, so I get it put it in and still the same issue, like wtf.
So I try OMV instead and guess what same network driver issue for that as well.

How can I install ethernet drivers for TrueNas or at least is there other programs out there like TrueNas that support those drivers, I don't care if it cost money.

You don't. What made you think this is a driver problem? Because TrueNAS does have drivers for the Intel X520 series.

I googled it and sounded like I had an unsupported ethernet card. So how do I fix it then?

You use a supported ethernet adapter. The ASUS thing is not.

Your X520 may be a fake. If it does not have an Intel Yottamark on the back that passes validation, it is quite possibly a Shenzhen knockoff. If you paid less than a hundred dollars for it, it may be a knockoff. Etc.

Here's where I bought it

But your right I don't see a Intel Yottamark on it

Amazon is notorious for selling "fake" stuff in about every category of "stuff" you can buy...clothes to electronics

That's clearly not an Intel X520. Someone may have named it "X520" to confuse the issue, it might even attempt to be a knockoff of an Intel X520. I suggest returning it for a refund.

The Intel cards are green PCB with a bar across the bottom. Even those get faked. Legitimate Intel retail cards have a Yottamark that will pass validation, and are available used at a reasonable price. Last time I bought a round of X520-DA2's or -SR2's I think they were going for about $100-$125 each, and the single port -DA1 or -SR1's were about $75/each.

Thanks guys, I'll return it.
Would you know where I can get a real one? Intel itself doesn't appear to sell it directly.

You'll pay a lot for a new card.

I usually buy these used, from one of the dozens of datacenter teardown folks on eBay. I do this professionally, so I'm a bit picky, because I'd rather pay 20% more for a not-likely-to-be-a-problem item.

NOT an endorsement or even a recommendation:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/324652551951

Ticks all the normal "anti-fake" checkboxes I use.

Not from China.
Not even from the US West Coast (sometimes suspicious).
Established Seller.
Seller's other items are all IT recycling type stuff (super important).
100% feedback over thousands of sales.
Card looks legit.
Card has Yottamark.
Believable price range.

Again, this is an EXAMPLE, I am not endorsing/recommending this seller, but I am happy to tell you why I would buy it without being too worried about it. The only thing that raises my "suspicious" flag is that it includes both low profile and regular PCI brackets, which doesn't make sense for a server pull, but it turns out that sellers buy knockoff brackets so that they have a better chance of selling their cards. I have nothing against knockoff BRACKETS.

So I got the new Intel x520, put it in the computer and still same exact problem. It does have the Intel Yottamark on the back.
When I plug the sfp cable from the switch to the x520, the lights on the switch do not light up if that helps.

Now I think it might be the pcie slot on the mobo cause if I put the x520 in the other slot the switch lights up. However I can't fit the graphics card in the other slot; (power, reset, switch cords in the way)

Well. :-( You are not having an easy time of it.

I was hoping that this would be a simple "bad card" problem because this is a common issue, the Intel knockoffs are usually bad-to-terrible.

The flip side to this is that reusing a non-server motherboard doesn't always work out for FreeNAS, but that's even more of a train wreck, because the best fix for that is "replace the mainboard with something more appropriate," and yes I understand that's not an appealing answer.

If one of the slots is bad, you may not have a lot of good options here. The dark-on-dark pictures on the ASUS web site make it hard to see exactly what the deal is, but it looks to be some sort of mATX board.

Is your case large enough that you might be able to move one of the cards with a PCIe extension?

https://www.amazon.com/EZDIY-FAB-Express-PCIe3-0-Flexible-Extension/dp/B0778HNH29

This isn't a recommendation for this specific product, it's just an example. This might allow you to move your graphics card to one of the expansion slots not served by the smaller-sized mATX board. This of course assumes your chassis is built for larger-than-mATX boards.

This is probably grasping at straws, I know.

I'm going to try and go to microcenter to see if they sell that extender. hopefully they'll let me test it with the graphics card there, that way I'll know right away if it's a bad pcie slot. Thx I'll let you know if it works

Here's the mobo I bought, also on amazon lol

Alright want to give an update to this, I tried the Pcie Extender for the graphics card and the graphics card would not work, so I returned the motherboard and got a Asus ROG Strix B450-F mobo, I also returned the cpu and got one with onboard graphics, an AMD Ryzen 3 3200G. Reinstalled Ture Nas 12.0-U4, booted it up and well I'm farther than before but for somereason it just gives an ip of 0.0.0.0

Bump

I can set the ip by selecting 1 in the console
I set ip to 10.0.0.208
Gateway to 255.255.255.0

I can set the default route option 4 to
10.0.0.1

It then displays the new ip under the console but when I type it in on my computer to connect to it, it times out

I hope someone more knowledgeable on the basics of network addressing will be able to confirm that your
10.0.0.1 gateway and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 are appropriate. I am only familiar with Class C.

I don't know what's right/wrong .. but I run 10.0.77.0/24 without issue
