I'd like to reference this post:

https://www.ixsystems.com/community...-support-vms-in-freenas-freenas-corral.59097/

I have been running my home FreeNAS server for several years with this motherboard:

https://www.supermicro.com/products/nfo/Xeon_X9_E5.cfm?pg=MB

I have two Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5540 @ 2.53GHz processors and have just discovered that I am unable to create Virtual Machines. I'm getting a similar error as the above forum post:

[EFAULT] VM ubuntu_utility failed to start: 15/03/2019 13:57:02 Listening for VNC connections on TCP port 5754 15/03/2019 13:57:02 Listening for VNC connections on TCP6 port 5754 ROM boot failed: unrestricted guest capability not available fbuf frame buffer base: 0x882e00000 [sz 16777216]

The SuperMicro page states that this board supports up to two Xeon®Processor 5600 Series (Westmere). My question is, can I keep this X8 mobo and just buy two new Xeon processors in order to be able to create VM's within FreeNAS or would I require a newer X9 mobo, along w/ the newer processors.

Thanks!

Your link is not what you must have intended because it does not point to a system board.

It is possible to upgrade the processors. It would be better to upgrade the system board and processor. Cost of just the processors is certainly going to be less.

Edit: Board model in thread title. Sorry I missed it: X8DTH-i

. No need to worry about the link. Then we can tell you for sure what the best processor available for that board is.

This is the best processor that will work in your system board:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Matched-Pa...12MB-6-Core-1333GHz-LGA-1366-CPU/142176826934
I have a Windows server at work running a pair of those and it does Hyper-V without a problem. It is in our development and test environment, not production, but I have run eight VMs on it without any trouble and it supports 192 GB of RAM.
These would be compatible if you are interested in RAM:

Chris, many thanks for your quick response! I apologize for the bad link. It appears you don't need it, but I'll link the correct one anyway.

In either case, I will look at purchasing the processors you've suggested. I currently have 32 GB of RAM and have experienced no issues with running FreeNAS. I suppose now that I'm looking to create VM's, I may need to, as you suggest, look into upgrading RAM. Thanks for that mention.
