Damn, I had no idea about wdidle. I just bought another green drive!

Can I do smartctl while volume is silvering?

Sure, you can read the SMART data at any time. Just don't overlap SMART tests with heavy IO.

We can tell that you have a "green drive" just by seeing this line:

193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 1335262

You should have run "wdidle" on the drive before putting it in use.

Please post the smartctl output of the other 2 drives in code tags, so we can view their health.

Code:
 smartctl -a /dev/ada1

Wow. Nominated for the highest LCC ever. At least the highest I've ever seen. Doing the math, at 18972 power on hours, and the above LCC, the hard drive unloads and loads it's head every 38 seconds.

No wonder we recommend a 300 second load cycle timer.

At some point I see they had short tests configured every hour. I'm personally don't think there's any point. Stick to a long test every week or two and you'll be better off.

Is there any point in using wdidle at this point? From your reaction, I guess they are going to fail soon anyway.
If I connect an external cd-rom player, and boot up with UBCD, can I change my drive settings with WDIDLE3 on all drives at the same time (all of them are wd green disks)?

Wow, that is almost 6 times as many load cycles as my worst Greens.

Won't hurt, might help.

There used to be a link to a pastebin link of someone's SMART data that was over 2 million load cycles with no problems on the disk. Haha.

Ok the pool has now resilvered without errors, I also scrubbed the volume:

Code:
[root@freenas] ~# zpool status
  pool: NAS
state: ONLINE
status: The pool is formatted using an older on-disk format. The pool can
still be used, but some features are unavailable.
action: Upgrade the pool using 'zpool upgrade'. Once this is done, the
pool will no longer be accessible on older software versions.

I will perform a long test on every drive and return with results and would be very happy if you guys could recommend future actions.
Thank you for your help so far!

I'm not familiar with 8.3.1 so I don't know if it has this capability, but you should schedule SMART tests to run on a regular basis. As an example, I have short tests nightly and long tests weekly.

Also configure e-mail reporting so it will let you know as soon as a drive fails a test.

Plus look into WDIDLE - it may be a case of "closing the corral door after the horses have escaped" but it will slow down that excessive drive parking.

Well, I'm no expert either, but it seems like the report is recommending you to upgrade your pool ;)
