I have a FreeNAS box running with Constellation ST1000NM0011 drives. The drives are good, but when they are in standby, I get an error when probing powermode.
Code:
smartctl -n standby /dev/da3
smartctl 5.43 2012-06-30 r3573 [FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p5 amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-12 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net

ataCheckPowerMode(): ATA CHECK POWER MODE returned unknown Sector Count Register value 81
CHECK POWER MODE returned unknown value 0x81, ignoring -n option
ATA device successfully opened

Use 'smartctl -a' (or '-x') to print SMART (and more) information

When the drives are not in standby, I get this:
Code:
smartctl -n standby /dev/da3
smartctl 5.43 2012-06-30 r3573 [FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p5 amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-12 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net

Device is in ACTIVE or IDLE mode

Any input on this behaviour? Is is OK or really, really bad? I have rechecked cables, even replaced cables, but with no effect.
Motherboard is an Intel DH77DF, controller IBM ServeRAID M1015, cross flashed to a LSI9211-8i in IT mode.

If you get this on all your drives then I'd say smartctl does not support that drive.

I find it odd that the drive data you gave us has only 43 hours of run time yet a substantial amount of errors. You should check all your drives to see if this is normal. I have a few of this model drive at work and we leave them running as they are enterprise class drives so we demand they are always available.

Seagate thinks they are an industry leader and instead of SMART attribute #1 being actual errors they include every single ECC error the drive encounters while being powered on. Beleive it or not it is completely normal for a significant number of sector reads to require the ECC to fix the data. (I bet you really trust hard drives with your data now, huh?) Seagate includes those corrections in SMART attribute #1 for some reason while nobody else does. Go figure! Its completely normal for all Seagates to have a crazy crazy high value for #1.

As for the error message, that's an issue with the hard drive itself. I'm not sure how you could get around it easily. I'd call Seagate and ask them. I'd be upset at the least that I can't obtain SMART data whenever I want.

Ty for your input. I've set "HDD Standby" to "Always on". No more error messages, since the error only occurred on spin-down. Out of sight, and out of mind  I've posted the error on Seagate Forums, maybe support will reply.

Final comment:
According to this document, the "correct" output for idle state is 80h (80h Device is in PM1: Idle state). 81h is most likely a Seagate exclusive output. Yeah :-( It sure feels great paying $$$ for enterprise drives, that dont follow standards.

As long as I avoid spin down, I get no errors. It wasn't that big a necessity anyways.

WOW. Yet another reason why I don't buy Seagate drives anymore. Their ignorance of standards in recent years is just sickening to me. I swore by Seagate between 2003 and 2008. I haven't recommended one since. Since all of my friends get their advice from me I haven't seen a Seagate drive in almost 4 years either.

You know the companies like WD and Seagate both have good periods of time and then bad periods of time. When I originally got into computers it was IBM drives (not a small drive at all), then in the PC world it was WD drives were good in the early 90's and then they went to crap and Seagate were on top. My personal favorite which has never ever disappointed me are Samsung drives. But now WD is swinging back and I feel they are a reliable product again overall. If Samsung made an affordable NAS drive for home use, I'd be buying those but WD Red is right on the mark using proven history of their WD Green drives.

What shocked me was to see there is a 10000 RPM 1TB Raptor drive out there now! I wonder how reliable that one will be.
