So... I deleted my last volume. Swapped out the 3x2tb Green HDDs in RAIDZ1 for 6x3TB Red HHDs in RAIDZ2 and now SMARTD is not running. Before it would run every 30 min and show status in the Show console messages in the footer and now all I get is whats below.

Apr 19 17:50:25 freenas notifier: Stopping smartd.
Apr 19 17:50:25 freenas notifier: smartd not running? (check /var/run/smartd.pid).
Apr 19 17:50:25 freenas notifier: Starting smartd.

All 6 drives have S.M.A.R.T. enabled.
S.M.A.R.T. is "ON" under services.
System has been shut down completely and restarted.

S.M.A.R.T. Settings:
Check interval 30
Power mode Never - Check the device regardless of its power mode
Difference 0
Informal 0
Critical 0
Email to report My Email

No additional CRON jobs or S.M.A.R.T. Test.

Any idea on how to get smartd started again?

Thanks,
OCM

First, what is RAIDZ6 ?
Second, I know it's obvious but did you power off (meaning power off not reboot) your system and turn it back on again? This typically gets it working again.

Also I truly hate the "Power mode Never" and then it says it will check the drives, not your fault, I just think it's stupid wording.

Also, help us help you, give us some specifics of your system and software. Are you running 8.3.1-Release-p1 ? -p2 dirty? what? What drives, MB, etc...

RAIDZ2, typo, I was thinking Raid-6.

System has been powered off completely and restarted various times.

Is "Power mode Never" an incorrect setting?

Build: FreeNAS-8.3.0-RELEASE-p1-x64 (r12825)
Platform: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHz
Memory: 16057MB
HDD: 6x3TB WD Reds

Yes, "Never" is a valid and good setting for SMART to operate.

I need to take a step back here because I read your original posting again, so what is you problem again? Based on the messages
Code:
Apr 19 17:50:25 freenas notifier: Stopping smartd.
Apr 19 17:50:25 freenas notifier: smartd not running? (check /var/run/smartd.pid).
Apr 19 17:50:25 freenas notifier: Starting smartd.

The last message states smartd is starting. No error message after that. Is the SMART service listed as "ON" ?
You can check is smartd is running by typing at a console window 'ps -A | more' and look through the data for 'usr/local/sbin/smartd' with some additional data on the end of the line.

So I triggered off the fact that you thought you had a problem when I should have paid more attention to what you said. I don't think you have a problem at all.

OK, so this is what I found.

10057 ?? I 0:00.03 /usr/local/sbin/smartd -i 1800 -c /usr/local/etc/smart

Is smartd running?

If so, why is there no evidence of smartd checking the disks in the console footer as before?

smartd -q showtests

I hope this is enough information to determine what the frak is going on.

Could this be the problem? I'm using WD Reds with Build: FreeNAS-8.3.0-RELEASE-p1-x64 (r12825)

Smartd is running on your machine. Just because a drive isn't in the smartctl database doesn't mean things are not working and smartctl hasn't changed in quite sometime. I chatted with Bruce last year about a problem and he updated the code, since then I don't expect to see another update anytime soon.

Holy cow, you had a short test scheduled for every hour? Damn, that's excessive! But hey, it's up to you. So what you are saying is that in the past 39 hours of system run time that there hasn't been a short SMART test? Did you setup the system to perform a SMART test and the periodicity? Sounds like operator error to me right now assuming I understand what you want done.

Post a screen capture of the GUI --> Left column --> System --> S.M.A.R.T Tests --> View S.M.A.R.T. Tests

I will not entertain that kind of craziness. That was just nuts wasn't it? If I had time to debate that well I would but in another thread.

Cheers!
P.S. remember when you had only a few postings, look at you now!

Only ran it every hour as a test to see if it was actually running. I have since then deleted that SMART test since it never actually ran at all. At least that what I think.

I've started a new daily test. 2200 everyday to see what happens. First test should start in an hour. How can I make sure smart is actually running as tasked?

I wasn't poking fun at anyone. Everyone has to start somewhere. I was just trying to get a laugh. If we can't laugh at ourselves who can we laugh at?

Oh I did laugh, it was funny.

To see if the test worked, type in 'smartctl -a /dev/ada0' and compare the #9 Power on hours value to the SMART Test results. That will tell you when the smart test was completed.
The only time you should get an email is when it fails the test. You could create a script which will forward the results if you like, search for it on these forums as there are a few of them but one thread which I started has the largest participation and there are a few very good scripts there.

EDIT: Here is the thread if you want to pursue this: http://forums.freenas.org/showthread.php?6211-Setup-SMART-Reporting-via-email

Also, I've been trying to log into SSH without any luck. For some reason Putty will not take my root password to give me access to my NAS box.

Thats a whole other issue I'm currently working on. Copy/Paste in Shell

Operator Error??? :o

I do thank you all for your help. :D

Please provide hardware details as per the forum rules. Are the HDDs connected using a Hardware RAID Controller?

I will try my best. I am new to all this talk, I have a dell Poweredge r715 with 6 SAS drives:

3x600GB
3x300GB

That gives me 6 Virtual Disks which I can see in FreeNas. I have created two volumes, both in Raidz.

I configured each of the 6 drives as a Raid0 Virtual Disk in my BIOS.

My guess would be because you're running with "RAID0 virtual disks" and aren't passing the discs directly through to FreeNAS.

The first step would be to find out which HW RAID controller is used. Some models (Dell H200 and H310 for example) can be reflashed to IT-Mode, in which they operate as host bus adapter (HBA) with no unwanted RAID functionality.

Thank you, I will look into this. I have a Dell Poweredge R715 - not sure where to begin. I will start doing my research now.
