Been getting SMART errors on my console. Seen drives fail, but given the life of this drive I am a little surprised. Drive is 5+ years old. NAS has been mostly turn/off as use. Recently moved it into a new case and keeping it on 24/7.
Code:
May 20 16:00:05 freenas smartd[17511]: Device: /dev/ada1, 384 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
May 20 16:00:05 freenas smartd[17511]: Device: /dev/ada1, 384 Offline uncorrectable sectors

Looking at similar posts and see that most people with this error are showing where the `LBA_of_first_error` is and can tell the drive to stop using the sectors or that their drive is hosed. Hoping someone could shed a little light on my error since its showing blank. Assuming the drive is hitting unreadable sectores and failing the scan. I am going to have to replace the drive. but if I can avoid shelling out ~$250 for a new one I would like to.

Looks like extended SMART failed and you have sector failures. I would replace it, despite the low hours on it.

Also, isn't that an SMR drive? Might want to double check so you don't get more of those.

Could you elaborate[speculate] more on why it failed?

I haven't followed along with the whole SMR drama but what good are my drives now? Looks like I am going to look into replacing the whole pool.

It could have failed for any number of reasons. Mechanical things fail. You did mention it is 5 years old. Could be heat/cold slightly changing the shape of things, could be manufacturing defect that first showed up now. You may also want to research the effects of SMR and what errors others get - could be caused just by that.

I am going to have to replace the drive.
Yes, you are. In addition to the pending sectors, there are the 1344 bad sectors that have already been reallocated, the ATA errors that have been logged, and the fact that the disk failed the only SMART self-test in its lifetime (which should have been happening on a scheduled basis).
