For a few months now I've received SMART alerts on one of my disks. Not sure how to pull the rest of the logs off freeNAS, but here's what's not been dismissed yet:
Device: /dev/ada5, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Sun, 08 Dec 2019 14:40:10 GMT Dismiss

info
Device: /dev/ada5, Self-Test Log error count increased from 5 to 6
Tue, 26 Nov 2019 08:41:23 GMT Dismiss

These are not the only errors I've received. Here's the SMART readout:

Code:
@freenas ~]$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/ada5
Password:
smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [FreeBSD 11.2-STABLE amd64] (local build)

Western Digital is a little funny about how they report errors. That pending sector may get reallocated the next time data is written to it. This tends to indicate that the drive is beginning to go bad. If it is still under warranty, you might want to send it in for replacement and if it is not, you might want to plan on buying a replacement drive and maybe even a spare. I try to keep a few spare drives available for doing replacements. I just put a full set of new drives in my system about a year ago, so I have not needed to do a replacement in a while, but I did that because all my drives were over five years old and I was having to replace a drive every month for a little while. As your drives get older, they may start to fail more frequently.

It's RAIDZ2 so I can survive 2 dead disks. I'm running 6x WD Red 3TB. Right now my thought is to just buy the new disk and leave it to the side. If the errors get worse and more frequent I'll swap it... that's what I'm thinking anyways

Do you have the system setup to run periodic SMART scans on the disks?

A better plan would be to get that disk burned in and replace ada5. It's failed 6 smart tests, that drive is on it's way out.
