Sharing files between FreeNAS and media transcoding server

So i have an old computer that i'm re-purposing as a nas server running freenas. i also have another more powerful machine that i would like to use to transcode movies stored on the freenas machine, and stream them to my entire network. My question is, what media sharing protocol should i use to share files from my nas to my transcoding server? The Os on the transcoding server is yet to be determined. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, i know this already. I was wondering which would be best suited for my needs ( Pros, Cons, Limitations etc.)
