We have these Seagate Constellation ST4000NM0063 FIPS SED SAS hard drives and trying to build a NAS with them.
These are SEDs (Self Encrypting Drives) and we would like to set the security settings on them somehow, like 'security mode' to maximum (from the default 'high'), set a user and master password to it, be able to unlock them, security freeze them, etc.
Now, were these not SAS drives but SATA, we could use the Linux hdparm utility - from a live CD boot - , for example to set password and lock the drive:
#hdparm --security-set-pass PWD /dev/sdX
The above works with SATA disks like the Seagate ST4000NM0053 SED HDD beautifully, but not with the SAS ST4000NM0063 (not even information on the drive can be received on these with "hdparm" /probably because hdparm is for SATA disks/).
I am looking for a way to be able to do this with these SAS hard drives (preferably some command line utility). Does anyone have experience on how to do it?
"sdparm" does not seem to have this support, or if it does, it is surely well hidden somewhere.
It would be awesome if FreeNAS would have some GUI to do these things for SED hard disks (SATA and SAS both). Something like secure erase, security mode, lock, unlock, security freeze, etc.
Thank you
