Hey guys,

I just got emailed with one status message of FreeNAS:

Code:
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): WRITE(10). CDB: 2a 00 52 37 d1 69 00 00 10 00
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): CAM status: SCSI Status Error
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): SCSI status: Check Condition
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): SCSI sense: NOT READY asc:4,9 (Logical unit not ready, self-test in progress)
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0):
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): Field Replaceable Unit: 0
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): Command Specific Info: 0
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): Progress: 0% (0/65536) complete
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): Descriptor 0x80: f5 05
> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): Descriptor 0x81: 00 00 00 00 0(da6:mpr0:0:20:0): Retrying command (per sense data)

da6 is a HGST SAS hard-drive of a raidz2 vdev. When looking into FreeNAS-Reporting-Section, it seems to operate normal. All workload on all disks seems to be normal.

Since I'm concerned about this error, I would like to ask following questions:
- What does mean? : (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): SCSI sense: NOT READY asc:4,9 (Logical unit not ready, self-test in progress)
- Is there anything degraded or corrupted? I can't see any other errors in FreeNAS. Everything is looking normal!
- What does mean? : "> (da6:mpr0:0:20:0): Progress: 0% (0/65536) complete" Why is there a progress bar? What is the progress about?

Thank you, folks!

Sounds like you might be running non-background SMART tests, which is probably a very bad idea.

Dear Eric,
thanks a lot for your advise, that's a good point!
I just had a look at my settings and noticed, that SMART and Scrubs are scheduled for the same day (Sunday).

So i followed instructions of https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/scrub-and-smart-testing-schedules.20108/ and pulled apart the tasks from each other.
I also noticed a warning message in the freenas documentation: https://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_tasks.html#s-m-a-r-t-tests
Quote: take care when creating your test schedule as performance issues can occur when S.M.A.R.T. tests are run at the same time as scrub or resilver operations.

I'm angry at myself, that I didn't notice this point. :(

Well. That leaves only one question unanswered: What is the progress bar indicating? What is the meaning of: Progress: 0% (0/65536) complete?

Is this any indication of possible data corruption? Could there be anything wrong with the zpool now? Thats the only message I have in my logs... Did FreeNAS prevent any bad things from happen, by executing "Retrying command (per sense data)"? From my point of view, it looks like the retry was successfull, because there weren't any printed errors in the logs after this retry-attempt... but well, thats only a guess...

thanks again!
