Hi!

Is there a WebGUI setting to enable mDNS lookup of the server name to IP-address?

I’m new to FreeNAS and have precisely got my server up and running with FreeNAS 9.3-stable.

Everything working perfectly great, however I always need to enter the dynamical IP-address when connecting to the WebGUI. I would prefer to logon with the freenas.local address instead.

If I start an AFP share then the AFP service is properly registered and available for OS X clients.

Thanks for any hints!
PS. When reading previous release notes I got the impression the server name would be mDNS registered by default, but maybe things have changed in 9.3 or I mixed up things?

Avahi (multicast DNS, aka Bonjour) registration of all services, include
the web service, means you no longer need to have a head on the box to know
its IP address, even for initial configuration, if the system your browser
is running on supports mDNS (e.g. a Mac or mDNS-enabled Windows/Unix box).
The default address will be freenas.local (or freenas-n.local, where n is
the # of freenas.local instances already on the local network). This can be
changed by changing the hostname in the FreeNAS system or network configuration
screens.

Nope, that hasn't changed in 9.3. What is the hostname set in System -> Info?

Thanks for your hints!

It is set to "mynas" in System -> Info, and doing a "ping mynas.local" cannot resolve the host:
>> ping mynas.local

ping: cannot resolve mynas.local: Unknown host

I wrote "freenas.local" in my original question, thinking I would make myself clear.
However, doing a literal "ping freenas.local" can resolve the address correctly, althought the server name set to mynas.
Now I am confused!?
Perhaps I need to restart the server after changing System -> Info -> Hostname. (I will try that after my rsync is done in some hours.)

Before rebooting, see if restarting the AFP service does the trick. Also, I wonder if running /etc/netstart from shell does it (that should restart networking, if that command is included in FreeNAS).

Hi again!
Rebooting was the only choice!
Tried to run netstart, but it did not change my .local address to servername.
