This is my very first post and totally new to TrueNas Core or FreeNAS

I built this gaming PC back in 2015. Now I would like to rip out the motherboard and all the parts I can use to rack mount it on my 42U server rack and repurpose it as a Truenas server. https://goo.gl/photos/KG3ofimoCZn68wFr5

I am looking for a suiitable 4U rackmount case and I was wondering if anybody has done a similar setup.

Relevant specs:

Hydro Series™ H110i GTX 280mm Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

Corsair RMX Series, RM850x, 850 Watt PSU

G.Skill x2 8 GB = 16 GB RAM

I hope this enough information

This is PC is not being used much and I though I can put it to good use to build and home my Linux skills as I am thinking of a Proxmox cluster of 2 HP DL380 Gen 8 hosts.

Some current pictures as well on this link https://1drv.ms/u/s!AvJTEJ2dliG4g0t0oWbjML5oqjl_?e=olMzA7

Any information for this build would really help me. I am thinking of using SSDs for my build.

Many thanks in advance.

Repurposing gaming components is not particularly advisable. In the same way that gaming boards are specialized in ways that differentiate them from desktops, server boards are also specialized in ways that differentiate them. Yours at least has Intel ethernet going for it, so perhaps it isn't quite as tragic. However, liquid coolers are going to be a hard lift.

Most of the "aftermarket" 4U cases meant for random consumer mainboards are poorly constructed, have poor airflow, and ALSO other issues. Many people do not like the higher quality Supermicro ones because they actually have the correct cooling design, with noisy fans, which are not something that you can replace with "quiet" gamer fans, because the very nature of the chassis design relies on high static pressure differentials to force air around the teeny gaps between the drives and chassis. And you can't really use HP/Dell 4U's because they're designed for HP/Dell system boards. The noise tends to be the same issue with those as well.

Just a few things to consider. I'm sure others will chime in with more comments.

I see you're in AU.

You might want to look at this build done by @Stux , another Aussie. If only as an indication of what is easier for you to source.

I have used that same case to do a build here in CH (where I live) with a different/non-supermicro board (although it is a Server-designed one) and am happy with the results.
