Any recommendations out there for ECC unbuffered DDR3 ? Also will non-ECC unbuffered DDR3 work on this motherboard? I hate to buy new memory since I already have desktop grade non-ECC unbuffered DDR3.

FWIW, I have a x8sil-f in one of my servers and I am using 2x Supertalent W1333EB4GH and 2x Kingston KTD-PE313E/4G (4GB each - 16GB total, which is the max supported if using unbuffered ) without any issues what so ever.
But I have a Xeon... Socket 1156 i3 CPUs don't support ECC.

I didn't want to buy more memory, but after reading the stickie on ECC vs non-ECC. It is obvious to do it right and buy ECC memory. Thanks

In this case you will also need to buy a Xeon in order to replace your i3.
Like an x3430 which is really cheap and will provide ECC support.
I have an L3426 paired with my x8sil, but a quick search revealed it is 4x the price (I reckon because it is a low TDP Cpu ) and the power savings (if any in a NAS) don't justify the increased cost
