Hi guys,

I have a new system.

I was a total n00b and wanted to use hardware RAID 10, and ZFS on top.

From forum posts I understand that ain't good to mix hardware RAID and ZFS, so all my drives are now JBOD.

I'm trying to figure out what is the equivalent of RAID 10 with RAIDz

Using this little manual page:

http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Volumes#ZFS_Volume_Manager

Also this one:

http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Hardware_Recommendations#RAID_Overview

I'm not so sure...

And anyway for some reason, in the ZFS Volume Manager it won't let me choose any RAID or RAIDz option?

I have 4 drivers, absolutely all the same (4 TB each) all in JBOD.

The only options that the ZFS Volume Manager will give me is Mirror, Stripe, Log, Cache or Spare.

I was going for RAID 10 with those 4 drivers, I would like to know what would be your recommendation (use software RAID 10, or some RAIDz option, etc.?) and how to do that please.

THANK YOU!

You want a mirror and the drive layout to look like a 2x2 square. That will mean 2 drives mirrored and striped with the other 2 drives mirrored.

In the ZFS volume manager you need to select all 4 drives with the wheel gizmo.

See Dusan's post (#4) in this thread for a way to create a stripe of mirrors.

RAIDZ2 and mirrors are better for different reasons. Please research how each handles failed disks to decide which is better for you. Some prefer mirrors and some prefer RAIDZ2.
