Hi all!

I am new to the Freenas game, and was hoping to get some help with building my first NAS.

My build is centred around a HP proliant ML350p Gen8, which I got for the fine price of $0. I am buying a lsi sas expander, but I am uncertain of how the disks should be powered.

Here are the two options I am considering:

  • Using the HDD cage already in the server. This is convenient, but I don't know if it is compatible with the HBA, given that it is normally used with the Smart Array p420 on the motherboard.

  • Getting a new HDD cage. These seem to require SATA-power cables. The motherboard has 8 pin connectors intended for adding more drivecages, but the user guide does not specify what kind of connections these are. Can I use 8 pin to 4 pin moles, and then 4pin moles to sata power?

Does anyone have any recommendations or tips on how I can power my disks?
