I just upgraded freenas via the webgui currently using: FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE (Installed OS)
Server details

-(3) Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 Raid-z1
-(1) Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR240GB-DX 2.5" 240GB (for Downloads/Jails)
- On board server lan is plugged directly into router ( mi424wr from verizon )



As soon as the nas rebooted it showed 2 of my drives with the unreadable/uncorrectable sectors, rebooted and now its only 1 drive.

Tried switching Sata ports on motherboard, it doesnt seem to effect anything. Drives come online then throw a system alert. Any other easy trouble shooting things I can do? ( looking for extra sata cables to swap them out)

RAIDZ1 is going to be a serious liability. ada1 is dying. ada2 doesn't look too good either. To top things off, ada0 has a few high-fly writes.

Start replacing drives.

yah i have 3 on hand, just gonna +3 more and build a raidz2.

What are the key indicators of drive failure? Not exactly sure what good ranges are for specific categories:
what is considered an old drive?

Ada1 is starting to fail. Ada0 and ada2 are ok to me.

The problem is you run short SMART tests instead of long tests so some values might be false because of that. I recommend to run at least one long test on each drive and then repost the stats ;)

And I agree with @Ericloewe on the RAID-Z1, it's not a very good idea with drives this large.

Usually you're happy if a drive run for 5 years (44000 hours).

ada1 failed the SMART test. It's defective and needs to be replaced. ada2 is showing some questionable values, but is passing the tests. It looks like all three of your disks have gotten way too hot in the past, but are running at decent temperatures now.

With airflow temps of 81, 91 and 83, and drive temps of 71, 73 and 67, it's as if there was no cooling airflow at all at some point.

Yah, I had a previous server fail ( before i upgraded the board ) ended up getting stuck in a boot loop over night and the drives were on fire from spinning up and down for an extended period. I already backed up all my critical data.
At this point I have 3 drives on hand. and only 6 drive bays. So my question would be as this is a home media server ( nothing too important ). Would it be better to make two raidz1 arrays ( right now I have 3 drives and can start preserving the data, or wait a couple of days to get 3 more and just go raidz2). If i went two raidz1's they would not mirror data and contain their own. ( Unless I throw the server into my old antec 1200 case, just a huge case for a m-itx board )

Yes, when defining "better" as "more reliable". However, having two pools does give you more flexibility, at the cost of greater management burden. RAIDZ1 with large drives (2TB and up) is much more vulnerable to data loss than RAIDZ2, but for some uses the risk is acceptable, e.g. everything on it is one of three copies (original and another backup), or easily recreated, or of little value.
