In /var/log/samba4 there are two large files. log.smbd (35Mb) and log.smdb.old (52Mb). In the CIFS control panel the log level is set at Normal. There are no other obvious large log files in the /var/log folder that I can see. The shell window in the GUI shows no messages since the upgrade to 9.2.1.5 and these messages. I assume, by this that everything is running "normally". In fact, apart from this Mac file copy to FreeNAS, the server has been running beautifully with this version of FreeNAS - no more High CPU and core dumps from Samba. This the extract from the GUI shell/log window to show that nothing of note has happened for the past 8 days:

I just examined the 52Mb log.smbd.old file and there is nothing in there but messages about the file copy. This is the top of the file:

The bottom of the file looks like:

If this file covers 6 minutes of the copy, then the server must have created hundreds of these log files to cover the entire six hour copy between the Mac and the FreeNAS server.
The current log.smbd file, which is only 35Mb in size, looks similar to the above until the copy finishes at 23:23 hours.
