Hi,

I have 8GB ram with the following size drives with 3SATA ports
1. 4TB - Segate NAS
2. 3TB -WD NAS
3. 1.5TB - WD Green

I wanted to create the best redundant setup for the drive listed above. What would the recommendation be. I am thinking 4+3 as a single pool with mirror; Can I take the 1 TB leftover from the 4TB and mirror with 1.5 TB and use the 500GB as non-backed up space. I want to be able to loose a drive and still have the data leftover while maximizing the storage.

I am restricted on the memory, so is it better if I purchase another 4TB so I can mirror with the other 4TB. And use the 3TB as non-backed up space.

No matter how you create your pool, each drive will only as big as your smallest drive. You will waste space on both your 4TB and 3TB drives, you'll use at most 1.5TB.

Yes.

Technically, you can do all kinds of ugly things with ZFS at the command-line using partitions instead of whole disks. This will end in tears when a drive fails, so don't do it if you value your data.
