I noticed there was an upgrade to Plex available and so I tried to update. This failed miserably "Unable to create PBI" and so I - thinking I was clever - deleted the plugin and downloaded the updated version. This downloaded and installed just fine, but now the plugin will not start:

May 7 20:29:14 freenas manage.py: [freeadmin.navtree:577] Couldn't retrieve http://192.168.0.116/plugins/plexmediaserver/4/_s/treemenu: timed out
May 7 20:32:56 freenas manage.py: [plugins.utils:91] Couldn't retrieve http://192.168.0.116/plugins/plexmediaserver/4/_s/status: HTTP Error 503: OK

Honestly this FreeNas has been such a headache of late I'm close to putting Windows on the box instead.

Can anyone help me out?

Not a definitive answer but you will need more RAM if you want to run Plex or any of the other plugins. 8GB is the minimum for just a filer. Odd random behavior is usually one of the indicators of insufficient memory.

Are you running any other plugins or jails?

One other plugin - Transmission.
