P11C-I/NGFF2280 - HBA card required?

I've bought a P11C-I/NGFF2280 motherboard. I would like to know if the onboard mini-SAS HD port will work with TrueNAS, it supports up to 4 disks (which is enough for me). Or will I have to get a HBA card? I'm aware that the HBA card might need to be flashed in order to work. Hence why I don't want to assume the mini-SAS HD port will work. Thanks.

TrueNAS generally fully supports the following things:

1) Intel SATA AHCI ports provided by some sort of vaguely modern (post-2010) Intel chipset, PCH, SoC, etc.

2) Intel SCU ports powered by a PCH (may be SAS or SATA AHCI).

3) LSI HBA ports on an HBA that has been crossflashed to IT mode.

Generally we recommend Supermicro server boards because everyone uses them. When you decide to go offroad and pick random off-brand server boards (and I assure you that ASUS is an off-brand server board) then it becomes difficult to make statements about what your board will or will not do; best guess is that it looks like it probably would work, but off-brand stuff has stabbed me in the back often enough that I wouldn't bet $20 on it.
