Talk about learning something new each round - so you're saying there is a compression algorithim running with ZFS also. Is that something that can be turned off?

Yes, but if you have a decent CPU it actually makes the system faster because it reduces the volume of data that must be passed in and out of the disk drive, so you wouldn't want to turn it off. Some people do for bench-marking, but the total performance is usually better with it on.

With memory and processor bandwidth being still significantly higher than sata - spinning disk throughput I could see that working out.
