No Hard Drive LED lights, is it normal for my build?

Just purchased 2 LSI 9211-8i card, flashed to IT mode. Now the HDD LEDs aren't working anymore. They quickly flash when I power on the server, but afterwards, go dark. They blink on disk activity. Before I started using the HBA card, the lights would stay actively on and blink when there's activity.

My setup:
HP DL380 G6
2 LSI 9211-8i
16 HP 1.2TB 6G SAS Drives

In my experience, when using SAS drives lights stay on but SATA drives don't only when there is activity.
