NIS Integration w/ Freenas

Hi All,
We use NIS authentication within our network and would like to integrate our FreeNAS 9.2.1 boxes to able to use the service as well. I was able to select NIS for Directory Service and added the appropriate NIS domain and started the service. That seems to work, however, we get strange behavior after this is done. For example, I'm not able to connect to a CIFS share that is assigned to a NIS user. I can ssh into the Freenas boxes with the NIS account however. I can't quite get a wrap on the NIS integration with Freenas so if anyone could point me to ideas or suggestions to try that would be much appreciated.

jgreco - I wish we could get rid of NIS but it is so much a part of our network set up.
