I currently have a Dlink NAS box, and looking to switch to a FreeNAS system in the near future. I just have a few quick questions.

1) If my hardware fails, and I would need to load a fresh copy of FreeNAS on a new machine lets say - is my data able to be recovered? IE: Will the new FreeNAS install detect the existing software RAID so I can pick up where I left off?

2) If I started with lets say, 1TB worth of storage now, can I add storage/upgrade drives later?

We need to have a FAQ for your questions.

1) Yes

2) It depends, not really, or not like you might be thinking... for example not like Drobo where you can mix and match drives and add them whenever. Do some more reading about ZFS, this question has been asked here at least 20 times already.
