new storage for VMs

Hi to all
I have to move some VMs (about 100) in one or more freenas storages.
These storages would be temporary, as current free version of freenas doesn't offer any HA solution.

I have 3 DELL PowerEdge R710 that I would like to use.
Current VMs are running on some HW RAID-6 with 4 or 6 SAS 15k disks.

Current IOPS are fine.

What do you suggest for new hardware ? 2 RAIDZ-2 with 4 disks each? This should give me twice IOPS than a single RAIDZ2, right ? So moving from SAS 15k to SATA 7.2k should not be an issue.

Any other suggestion?

For a VM datastore, you want mirrored VDEVs for best performance. More mirrors means more IOPS. Also adding a good SLOG device will speed up synchronous writes.

Probably, a 3-way mirror is the way to go. I'll never run anything with less than redundancy 2 in production, after loosing a whole server full of valuable data due to double failure in the same mirror.

I really hate RAID1 or RAID10. Hopefully, ZFS supports 3 way mirrors and SATA disks are cheap, thus I can use 3 4TB SATA disks in a single mirror.

IOPS should be 3x of each single disks, right ?

Anything similiar to DRBD in Freenas ?
