Hi,
When I'm trying to do a pkg update I'm getting an error
Code:
[root@freenas] ~# pkg update
Updating local repository catalogue...
pkg: file:///usr/ports/packages/meta.txz: No such file or directory
repository local has no meta file, using default settings
pkg: file:///usr/ports/packages/packagesite.txz: No such file or directory
Unable to update repository local

I looked on the internet for an answer but I couldn't find any.
Please help me.

It is not possible to update or install packages within the FreeNAS base OS. FreeNAS is an appliance and should be treated as such.

If you want to install custom software, you do this in a jail. This is covered in the documentation.

In the jail, set up DNS in /etc/resolv.conf.

That will get reset with what the GUI has configured won't it?

Please provide your hardware specs and freenas version. This is required for all new threads. The url in the error resolves just fine on my machine but you say dns is working so one of us is wrong.

Thanks, I was trying to mount an NTFS USB drive to copy some data off it and was having all sorts of problems.
But we I read your comment, I changed my thinking about it, had a look around the web interface and low and behold theres an option to import the disk!
Some I'm trying that now....

I'm guessing I'll then be able copy the data off and detach the disk.

This. is so unhelpful then just say nothing. Yes we should not use pkg etc. But i ain't going to set up a jail for just nmap.
where big boys here we can decide what to do or not.

Any ways let me correct that answer for you:

Pkg is disabled by default freenas is intended to be controlled via gui. IF you really wish to use pkg look here:
Note: This is not supported in anyway and can corrupt your installation.

You revived a thread that had been dead for three years to incoherently scold @m0nkey_ for saying the same thing you ultimately said?

No don't do this. You are breaking so much. There is months of testing and verification that goes into the specific version and set of tools provided by freenas. You are also creating an unpredictable experience especially when it comes to, reboots, upgrades, roll backs and troubleshooting.

If your needs require stepping outside the box provided by freenas you should just be running freebsd.

This. is exactly the problem in YOUR opinion i should be running freebsd. People should not be using root and not use cli.
I agree completely but it's our opinion. It's not up to us to force someone if he asks how to do something we can tell him or not. I really do not see the point of all the yea we know how but your not allowed to do it posts.

I doubt devs and plugin creators do not install stuff via pkg to test or develop are they as well not allowed ?
I rarely post stuff cause i have difficulting writing and expressing myself due to dysgraphia. So it tends to get frustrating searching for information and finding the same basic cut paste message that has no value other then just belittle someone.

Yes, you're right. And how many years is it from January 2017 to February 2020? Yes, there was a single post in September 2018, but the discussion had died in January 2017.
